Stop your jaw pain!

What is TMD?

TMJ or temporomandibular joint disorder is the dysfunction of jaw joint. TMJ disorder can create symptoms such as:

  • Headaches and ear aches
  • Jaw clicking and jaw locking
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Ringing in ears
  • Facial, jaw and neck pain
  • Difficulty opening and closing of the mouth
  • Difficulty chewing and swallowing

If you suffer continuously from any of the above symptoms you could have a TMJ dysfunction.

How do treat TMD?

At Prospect Dental Clinic, we work to determine the cause and offer a range of options in order to deal with the issue before it damages your teeth.
Treatment options can include:

Customised Night Guards

Wearing a customised oral appliance such as a night guard or occlusal splint to eliminate grinding and properly positioning the jaw.

Botox® (Botulinum toxin A) – Not only used for wrinkle reduction

Botulinum or BOTOX can be used to immediately stop the clenching and subsequent headaches and jaw pain. This can lessen the destructive effects

of grinding and cease headaches associated with TMDs. Botox is a prescription medicine and is a natural, purified protein that is used therapeutically in dentistry to relax facial muscles. Put simply, Botox weakens the muscle enough to reduce the effects of TMD, grinding and clenching, but will not prevent proper use of the jaw muscle for eating.
